As a composer of music, I teach with the goal of enabling a student to express, learning to feel rhythm and sing pitch, not only to read music, but also to become inventive. To invent, you need a good foundation of playing technique and a level of comfort with the instrument. I utilize basic classical technique when teaching piano, yet I encourage playing of popular as well as classical songs.

I teach piano to 5 year olds and older, and begin with hand exercises and finger number and rhythmic notations, simple note reading, simple folk and popular tunes (trying to develop singing while playing skills). As students advance we add classical music to the mix to sharpen skills and enjoy the beauty of different musical styles.

I teach acoustic guitar to children in third grade and older. I begin with note reading and playing, quickly learning and using simple chords to play known songs, often of the student’s choosing. As possible I encourage playing and singing songs, and for advancing students, finger style solo playing (in which the guitarist plays the tune in the midst of the accompaniment).

The following observations are from Sally Rogers, Ph.D. assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center: " Musical activities rely on movements in which the entire body participates, but emphasize development of precise control of the smaller muscles of the arms and hands and those controlling the voice. Because of this total body movement, few other activities in which we engage are as well-suited as musical practice for building accuracy, speed, timing, smoothness and coordination of muscle control. Instrumental music study also offers sequential, pace learning in which small victories or advances lead to a sense of accomplishment. The music student learns that by repetition and step-by-step progress, goals are achievable."
